My work explores the definition of “representation matters”. With influences as diverse and varied as cartoon characters and the emergence of “black girl magic”, beauty in the Black community has numerous visual images that have become prominent icons. Ever since attending a Historically Black College, I have been fascinated with the array of representation of beauty and cultural expression. As the viewer delves into our community they are reminded that there is no “standard” of beauty and that it is all around us in various complexions, sizes, and beholders.
